5 Tips to Make Your Home Remodel Go Smoothly

We’re fortunate to have great customers, many of whom are repeats that we’ve worked with for years.

Yet even our “regulars” who are familiar with the construction process may not realize exactly what goes into a significant remodel or home improvement project.

That’s okay, because that’s our job! But having a little bit of knowledge about what to expect can make the process go even more smoothly.

Here are five things your contractor wishes you knew:

  1. Do Your Homework – It’s really helpful when customers have vetted their contractors! You’d be amazed how many job sites we’re called into so that we can “clean up” what an unlicensed, uninsured “contractor” has done. Your neighborhood handyman or your Uncle Bobby who “owns a lot of tools” are helpful in certain scenarios, but they’re not the people to lead your remodeling project. Aside from numerous liability concerns, if you ever have an insurance claim on work completed by an unlicensed contractor, your insurance company isn’t going to cover it. So protect yourself and your home and do some research about who you’re hiring.
  2. Be Decisive – It’s hard for us to get a project started if you’re still not sure what cabinets you want, or which flooring to choose. We’re happy to help guide you to choices within your budget, give you our advice, and even help you think about how all your selections will look together. But the ultimate decision has to be made by you. It’s your home and we respect that.
  3. Know Your Budget – It can be frustrating for everyone when a customer has a specific vision of what they want but very unrealistic expectations for how much it will cost. We understand the importance of a budget and will work with you to find solutions that fit both your finances and your vision. But granite countertops will always cost more than laminate, and there’s not much any of us can do about that
  4. Have Patience – We refer to it as a remodeling “process” for a reason. While we all want the process to go smoothly, sometimes there are circumstances out of our control, like two weeks of rainstorms when we’re stripping and replacing your roof. We’ll be communicative, flexible, and work as quickly as possible. We don’t want to be invading your home for any longer than we have to! Please just have patience with us.
  5. Trust Us – If you’ve (hopefully!) done your homework, you should be confident in our work and our reputation. This means allowing us to do what we do best – get to work on your home or business. Micromanaging which screwdriver we want to use just slows us down. Feel free to ask questions, express concerns, or come to us for clarification! Just trust us when we make a recommendation or insist on doing something a certain way. Ultimately, we all want to be satisfied with the outcome of our work.
