Is Your Deck Unsafe?

We’re suckers for a good deck. Decks can extend your living space, giving you the perfect place to host that backyard BBQ, or to sit and sip your coffee on a quiet Sunday morning.

Unfortunately, decks are also one of those “honey-do list” projects that sometimes don’t end well. DIY decks, porches, etc., are frequently unsafe and unfortunately, this is generally discovered by homeowners only after their deck starts to settle.

Thankfully, there are some significant warning signs which can help you determine if it’s time to call a contractor to evaluate and repair or replace your deck:

  • Your Railings Aren’t Secure – An obvious problem, it’s definitely a sign that it’s time to fix your deck if your railings are wobbly, rotting, too short, etc. Make sure that your railings are up-to-code; they’re your first line of defense against injury or accident.
  • Rotting or Cracked Wood – Over time, the elements can wear away at your deck, weakening it until it’s unstable. Regular maintenance and properly sealing the wood can help prevent this. If deck boards are soft, flashing is missing, or there are other signs of wear and tear, it’s time to call a contractor.
  • Missing, Loose, or Corroded Connectors – Nails, screws, and metal fasteners can also corrode over time. If they’re rusted, it’s time to replace them. And if they’re popping up, they may have loosened over time, due to temperature changes and other factors. Additionally, an up-to-code deck will have metal fasteners are key points, such as from the joist to beam. If these are missing, your deck was never properly constructed.
  • Shifted Footings – Conditions such as freezing and thawing weather or backfilled soil can cause footings to become uneven. This is a major concern, as footings are the primary form of support for your deck.

If your deck is exhibiting any of these signs, or if you’re ready to build or improve an outdoor living space, give us a call.
